iOSINLINE

The big day has finally arrived. Apple’s latest OS for iPhone and iPad can finally be loaded with iOS 6, the new software that promises over 200 new features. Here’s what you should know about the software and the upgrade.

You can update your Apple device by going to General menu and selecting Software Update. However, it might be a smarter option to wait out today because almost the entire Apple-loving world and their fathers are downloading the update right now. The servers are predictably slow and you don’t want to be stuck after a major portion of the update has been downloaded because of web traffic issues.

Once the device has been upgraded, you will notice a distinct change in some of the apps. The most major change will be in the Maps app. While Google has been providing its Map to Apple thus far, from now on, it will be Apple’s proprietory Maps software that will power your device.  While Apple has made tall claims about the feasibility and working of its software, latest reviews about the feature have been less than complimentary. Also, the Flyover function, which is supposed to give a live 3D view of a city, is very limited and is reported to work erratically. There is a turn by turn navigation feature but its effectiveness on Indian roads will definitely leave much to be desired, even when it arrives.

The other major feature, a new and improved Siri, is also likely to take time to figure out. Apple’s personal assistant can open apps loaded on your device and update your Facebook account among many other features. There is a glitch though. Siri does not seem compatible with all the devices that iOS 6 supports. Thus, while iOS 6 can be applied to iPad 2 and iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, Siri will not be upgraded with the latest features. And most of the upgrades are not yet available in India. There is also no guideline on when these features will be available.

If you use Safari, you can now go full screen on your device by simply touching the arrows on the corner. Another feature, called iCloud Tabs, syncs tabs between the desktop and iOS version of Safari. Another nifty feature allows your phone to send a message to a caller in case you can’t receive a call.

The App Store and iTunes store, from where Indians can download apps and games, has also undergone a slight revamp. In fact, this is the only facility that Indians can access among all of the new updates that Apple has listed on iOS 6, which is a tad unfair when you compare with the fact that countries like Laos have more upgrades than Indians.

Have you used the new iOS 6 yet? Tell us about your experience below.
