What is Ice Sculpting
Simply put, ice sculpting is an sculpting with the help of ice being used as a the raw material. The sculptures are functional or purely decorative. This art form is mostly practised in icy areas, where the climate and the location prove to be beneficial for ice sculpting.
How it's Done
Ice sculpting is practised in cold climates, and is done quickly. The atmosphere plays a vital part in this art form. The downside of ice sculpting is, that none of the sculptures are permanent and may either melt or deform with time. Hence, preservation only works to a certain extent. Usually, an assortment of pick-axes are used to sculpt a piece, but bigger ones are made with the help of chainsaws. These are prepared quickly, in a matter of minutes, so as to avoid melting and breakage.
Where's it Installed
Ice sculptures are temporary art installments, hence they're used as centre-pieces during food preservations, etc. They're even utilized as innovative alcohol dispensers. In some cases, cups, glasses and plates made out of ice are used to serve food or or a drink. Ice Sculpture Festival is held every year in Belgium on November 28, where sculptors from all across the world participate to exhibit their skills to the masses.
The most awe-inspiring and fascinating ice sculpture being made is in Sweden, and it's colossal! Every year since 1991, Sweden has been constructing an Ice Hotel each winter, and caters to hoteliers with rooms featuring different themes and elaborate ice carvings and decorations. Aptly titled the ICEHOTEL, it's a national attraction, and attracts guests the world over!
