An informal homonym assigned to the chemical Rophynol, also known as the 'date rape drug,' roofies are among the most notoriously dangerous drugs out there. In general however, it is more of a generic term used to describe any drug that can be used for date rape including other sedative-like substances such as ketamine.
Despite knowledge of its criminal uses, this is very much a prescription drug, available over the counter as a sedative or depressant belonging to the Benzodiazepine family and is produced worldwide by the company Hoffman-La Roche.
These drugs are virtually undetectable. They come in pill form and are small, white and generic looking. Being tasteless, colorless and odorless, considering the fact that they dissolve easily in liquid when crushed first, it's understandable why depraved rapists find this to be an easy tool that cand aid them in their sick goals.
The effects are quick acting--usually within 20 minutes--on most people but they do differ according to body weight and dosage. The most common effects include disinhibition, excitability, aggressive behavior, memory impairment (which is why many women victimized by it find it hard to report) drowsiness, semi-consciousness, dizziness, confusion and urinary retention to name a few. When mixed without alcohol, the effect can last from 8-12 hours and with it it can actually last unto 36 hours!
If you're concerned for the women in your life then send them these few easy-to-remember pointers that will help them stay safe from vicious predators. They are as follows:
-Always get your drink directly from the bartender and watch him open the bottle and serve it to you at a bar.
-Never accept open drinks from people you don't know or trust.
-Never leave your drink unattended.
-As far as possible, attempt to only accept drinks in closed containers like bottles, cans or tetra packs.
Following simple rules like the ones above may be the difference between getting raped or not, so pay heed. It will hold you in good stead.
