The origin of speed dating can be dated back to the Jewish culture of Aish HaTorah. The culture provides 'Speed Dating' as a social gathering for young Jewish men and women to come together, meet and marry.
The concept of speed dating is to make young men and women have a short date of around 3-8 minutes, after which they're rotated to have yet another date with someone else. At the end of this event, the participants are requested to submit their choice of date whom they would want to know more to the organizers. The organizers go through the list and if there is a match, the contact details of both the participants are sent across to each other. The last procedure isn't done openly and pronounced so as to avoid the dismay of rejection amongst the participants.
The participants are randomly paired for the duration and go in a certain sequence so as to avoid repetition. The 3-8 minute time-frame requires a participant to keep the conversations precise and to the point, without the drag and the long awkward moments of silence.
Speed Dating, unlike social gatherings at pubs, bars, etc. allows people to consciously be prepared to have a date, rather than creating an awkward situation for both the participants.
Presentation and communication skills go a long way in speed dating. Age, height and personality also prove to be the weighing point for both the sexes.
Speed dating has been trending in the USA since the late 90's and recently taken various forms like online speed dating, sushi bars catering to speed dating, speed dating pubs, etc.
