The US goverment has been commissioning vehicles to its presidents since the 1930. In order to ensure a smooth—and more importantly, safe—ride, these cars have come equipped with state-of-the-art gizmos. They have also changed and evolved over time.
The current presidential mobile or presidential state car is actually based off a mid-sized truck called GMC topkick. Although the specifically modified limousine has a Cadillac badge on it, its interiors are truly one of a kind.
President Barack Obama's limo entered service on January 20, 2009—the day of his inauguration. Manufactured by US auto giant General Motors, this car doesn't have a specific name. But all Presidential vehicles have been referred to as Limo One or Cadillac One.
This car's front chasis is similar to the Cadillac's popular SUV, Escalade but it's tial is supposedly borrowed from the STS sedan—which is also a Cadillac model. However, this is where this car's similarity with street-legal vehicles ends and where the good stuff begins!
Limo One has a five-inch thick military grade armor and run flat tires. This mean it can be easily driven for a while after it gets punctured. Even the doors of this car are out of the ordinary as they weigh as much as the cabin door of a jumbo jet!
This car even has a leak proof and explosion resistant fuel tank. Even its engine has an Eaton Twin Vortices Series 1900 supercharger system. In other words, it's one of the most rugged vehicles on the road!
This seven-seater also has bulletproof tinted glass, which blocks external sound. In the event of a bio-chemical attack, this car ensures no deadly fumes enter within as it's sealed from corner to corner. It even has it own emergency oxygen supply and firefighting system.
While most features of this car have never been revealed to the general public, it is reported that the dashboard has an elaborate communication console. To add to it, a shotgun rests under the driver's seat in case he has to jump into action to save the President. In case you are wondering, the driver is a highly-trained Secret Service agent.
This unique machine, which costs about $300,000 and gives roughly 8 miles to a gallon, is the only car the US president rides in. It's airlifted in Air Force One to, both domestic and international locations!
