Filmwallahs were getting worried over the slow work on Yash Chopra’s latest directorial venture. The movie, which was titled only a few days ago as Jab Tak Hai Jaan, now finally has a trailer and promotional activities look set to begin soon. We saw the trailer and this is our opinion of what the film is most likely to be about.
Story of the times – While Yash Chopra’s romances generally have “timeless” attributed to them, Jab Tak Hai Jaan is definitely contemporary. This can be made out from the real London locations of Borough Market, Canary Wharf and Tower Bridge among others. Also, the designing of the actors is more suited to modern times (read no chiffon sarees in the cold London and Ladakh weather). Even Switzerland has been skipped this time around. The idea is to probably stay relevant and appeal to the yuppie generation. This is also probably why son Aditya Chopra shot the romantic scenes in the movie.
Relatable characters – The roles played by Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif are yet to be revealed by the makers. However, Anushka Sharma has said that she plays a working woman in the film, a detour from most Yash Chopra films. “"My role is that of a 21-year-old girl who is very hard working and ambitious. She is working for Discovery channel and is trying to make a documentary. I don't fit into the saree image because of the character but she has the same emotions; so it is a Yash Chopra love story," the actress has said.
Music and lyrics – This is something that Gulzar and Yash Chopra could not resist we are guessing. Some of the connotations in the lines said by Shah Rukh Khan are puzzling because they do not evoke love or passion and are generic. “Tera palat ke phir na dekhna; Nahin maaf karunga main; Jab tak hai jaan; Jab tak hai jaan.” That sounds more like Darr than Veer Zaara, Yash Chopra’s last directorial venture that released eight years ago. But we’re certain that the lyrics in this one will stun one and all. Also, it’s a shame that A. R. Rahman’s tunes have not been used in the promo. Hopefully this will be corrected later.
Uneven plot – The trailer does not give out anything of the movie’s premise. This is different from earlier times when you went to watch Yash Chopra’s movies based on the romance of a story you were familiar with. The cinematography, especially for the scenes shot in Ladakh are striking. But the last visual of Khan walking in the foreground with explosions all around is a bit tacky. The clean-shaven and bearded looks seems to confirm the rumour that Khan plays two different characters in the film.
Excitement levels – Although the trailer of Jab Tak Hai Jaan isn’t impressive by the standards of Yash Chopra, the buzz about the film is extremely strong. The movie began trending on Twitter 30 minutes after the trailer was released on Yash Raj Film’s YouTube channel. The YouTube trailer itself has garnered over 4000 comments and 6000 ‘likes’ within three hours of the trailer’s launch. Websites began linking the trailer to their site in a bid to get traffic while trade analysts are gushing about the prospects of the movie on their sites and various media outlets. Which proves that November 13 will turn out to lucky for the Jab Tak Hai Jaan team at the box-office.
