Let's start with the cold hard facts: Lana Del Rey is without a doubt the highest selling digital artist of 2012's first quarter. She also supposedly rose to fame with a 'viral' video. However, surprisingly enough, it only takes a quick Google search to realize that the phenom that is Lana Del Ray is every bit as fake as her botox-injected lips.
Prior to assuming her current stage name, Lana failed to make it in the music business as 'Lizzy Grant.' Since this became public knowledge, her house of lies crumbled before her eyes. What was the truth? There was no 'a star is born' magical story here. Del Ray was, is and will always be nothing but a canvas for other people to paint on; this is obvious fromt he fact that this rich daddy's girl banks on her father's largesse, his bevy of lawyers and managers, and a few plastic surgeons.
It seems once her first album flopped, she turned to her daddy's deep pockets to turn her life around. Flash forward two years, and now we have the sexy, seductress of a singer/songwriter who appears to have taken over the music industry.
Now here's where things get even more weird. New rumors have appeared of yet another personality Del Ray had once adopted--that of 'May Jailer.' We'll admit that this one hasn't been fully confirmed, but given her history with multiple identities, you can't blame us for assuming this may be true. She can't afford these rumours, after the millionaire daddy episode and her SNL fiasco (see video below).
Besides, she also appears to have become a bit of a drama queen of late. Perhaps it's all the press that's fatiguing her so much; but for a star who's finally got her 'big break' it seems a bit odd that she would cancel an entire concert in Japan because she was "tired!" That's right, she cited that as an excuse to call off an international performance!
The thing is, she's got plenty to offer musically that's not bad. But if it's authenticity that listeners crave (and as a listener, i'm going to say this is very much the case) then Del Ray is a sad anomaly. So for being unable to pick an identity and stick to it, assuming that everyone else--including her audience--is an idiot, and being so utterly malleable that it's simply sad, Lana Del Rey is our Idiot of the Week.
Here she is on SNL, badly pitching her way to glory:
Everything about it is fake. She doesn't have the personality to pull off a Lady Gagaesque mystique. As one viewer aptly put it, "Her voice sounds like it has multiple personality disorder."
