Rush Limbaugh has never been a stranger to controversy. In fact, one might even go so far as to say that controversy is a dear friend of his. As the most conservative, undeniably right-wing talk show host in the US, he’s courted his fair share of criticism thanks to his (outrageous) opinions over the years, so you might wonder why we’re not choosing to look the other way this time. Well, that’s because this time, Rush Limbaugh has stepped so far across the line that we’re not sure he can even see it anymore!
It all began when the topic of birth control was being debated at a congressional hearing. Naturally, the incendiary radio personality was dead set against public funding being used to provide women with contraceptives, insisting that it encouraged promiscuity. As if this weren’t blasphemous enough (contraceptives can be used for innumerable health issues besides preventing pregnancy), when Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown university student, testified that she did in fact use these pills and would like for them to be covered by publicly available health insurance plans, Limbaugh responded on his radio show later that day by doing the unthinkable.
He called her a ‘slut’ and a ‘prostitute’ and even argued that any woman who uses public funds to help pay for their birth control should at least post their sex tapes online so that ‘they all could watch!’ The subsequent fallout that occurred--including a rare apology from Limbaugh, outrage from both conservative and democratic women as well as a call to Fluke from President Obama himself—has left Limbaugh in the lurch.
Considering he has always made his income from attacking his enemies with impolitic remarks, he’s probably shocked at the backlash of this one but the reason for this is clear. In the past, he has been racist, bigoted and many other things to smaller communities and special interest groups, but this time he has single-handedly managed to offend an entire sex! He’s definitely feeling the pain in his bank account, because over 30 of his show’s advertisers have pulled their ads from his talk show, citing his comments as indefensible and wholly inappropriate.
Oh and did we mention that his apology was as lack-luster as it gets? He framed a public online apology for his ‘insulting choice of words’ but not once did he mention that was wrong! So for his wholly unnecessary and thoroughly reprehensible comments, Rush Limbaugh is our ‘Idiot of the Week.’
