Benito Mussolini, the Prime Minister of Italy, was the Italian counterpart of Adolf Hitler. Born on 29 July, 1883, Mussolini ruled Italy in different ways and means from 1922 till 1945, till the end of the World War II. Mussolini is considered to be the founder of modern Fascism, holding rule over Italy as the founder and leader of the National Fascist Party.
Mussolini started his political career as an active member of the Italian Socialist Party, where he supported World War I. He strongly believed that he would play the role of revolutionary and unite all the Italians residing in the surrounding areas of Italy. H was expelled for his pro-war cries which went against the majority's decision.
Mussolini lost faith in the Italian Socialist Party, and went on to form the National Fascist Party. Soon, Mussolini's tough leadership caught the people's attention and he was catapulted to national fame, and became the Prime Minister in 1922. Once in power, Mussolini started raising hell, and this is when Italy spiralled downhill.
Mussolini started bringing down all his opponents, either jailing them, or torturing and terminating them. He soon set up a political prison on one of the remote Mediterranean islands where all his opposers were shipped off. A militaristic regime was put in place and the new generation was brainwashed into the Fascist idealogy. He even revoked women's rights and rendered a vast majority of women jobless.
This was just the beginning. He even invaded Ethiopia. During World War II, Mussolini sided with Hitler when he realized that Italy could never take over the French and the British alone, and signed a non-military alliance. He was soon arrested and jailed and was to be handed over to the Allies, but the German army soon took over Italy and freed Mussolini, taking him to Germany.
During this time, Mussolini turned a new leaf and wanted to retire and quit politics altogether. But a threat from Hitler stating that he will invade Italy if Mussolini doesn't start a new Fascist party, made him grudgingly accept orders and do the needful. He was eventually caught on April 27, 1945 by some communist forces while they were heading to board a plane to Switzerland. He was eventually shot, and hanged upside down for public display.
