Gone are the days when umpires were supposed to be unbiased mediators who officiated matches while commanding players' respect. This seems to be the case, at least, when you talk about Daryl Harper. This loud-mouthed Aussie umpire created quite a buzz in cricketing circles with his poor decision-making, uncouthness and ill-timed comments last week.
While officiating in the second test between India and the West Indies in the recently concluded tour of the Caribbean, Harper made at least three poor calls, due to which India had to settle for a draw in the second test. For this he received some flak from the Indian camp--notably from a visible frustrated MS Dhoni.
In light of his erroneous officiating, Harper withdrew from the third test and that would have been that. Unfortunately, his bad calls were not the last thing we'd hear from Harper. Soon as he landed on Australian shores, he seemingly manned up and spoke up against the bully pulpit of Indian cricket. He even singled out Dhoni by stating he should have been punished for his remarks after the second test. To add to that, he claimed Dhoni threatened him by saying, "We've had problems with you before, Daryl."
We find it amusing how he thought a (naturally) disgruntled captain should've been punished for his umpiring mistakes. Also, Dhoni is far from the first person to comment on Harper's shoddy officiating. In 2010, England lodged an official complaint against Harper calling for his resignation. And in 2009, Harper made errors even while using supposedly foolproof decision review system. Evidently, no system is foolproof when it comes to this fool!
So, for refusing to retire gracefully after being given the chance to, dragging Dhoni's name in the muck, for being intractable and unyielding with young fast bowlers, and for being an overall buffoon, we proclaim Daryl Harper our idiot of the week!
