The Chennai Super Kings may be the luckiest team in IPL 2012, seeing as how they qualified to the playoffs through the back door, and are now playing for their third straight title. Despite all the ups and downs they've faced in IPL 2012, there's no doubt about the one consistent aspect of this outfit--MS Dhoni, the captain, the 'keeper and of course, the batsman.
The man with the magic touch has done it yet again. For the fifth straight year, he's led his team into the playoffs, and they are now on the brink of their third straight IPL title. All credit goes to the calm and collected captain, whose unconventional strategies tend to stump the best of opponents.
While the likes of Faf du Plessis, Murali Vijay and Dwayne Bravo have been the standout performers for CSK this year, Dhoni came to the party a little late--but certainly when it mattered. The Indian skipper decided to unleash some of the deadliest strokes, including the helicopter shot, against the mighty Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator game. His middle-order heroics saw him contribute 51 runs off 20 balls--an innings that knocked MI out of the tournament!
Just when everyone thought that Dhoni had lost his magic touch, he revived it thanks to his own brilliance at the batting crease. The nonchalant aggressor ensured his team got to play in front of their home crowd one last time--or should we say twice! While he's talented enough to hold his own in any situation, we feel that MSD has lady luck smiling on him ear to ear!
Even in the second qualifier against table-toppers, Delhi Daredevils, Dhoni and his team were fortunate from the word go. After losing the toss, DD captain, Virender Sehwag, inexplicably asked CSK to take first strike in a high-pressure game.
The Yellow Lions, of course, didn't need an invitation to come to the party, and they immediately launched into an all-out assault against a Morne Morkel-less DD--which incidentally was another freebie handed to Dhoni and co. by their hapless opponents! While Murali Vijay and Dwayne Bravo went about destroying any semblance of a chance the DD bowlers may have had, Dhoni also contributed with a handy 10-ball 23.
Given the roll he's currently on, we won't be surprised to see MSD reclaim the IPL crown. The man seems simply unstoppable, especially during the business end of the IPL. Now, all that remains between CSK and a three-peat is a confident Kolkata Knight Riders team. But we wouldn't put it past Dhoni' brilliant leadership and smashing strokeplay to make easy work of yet another opponent in the post-season!
So, for taking charge of his team's destiny--after a spate of good fortune--and batting like only he can, MS Dhoni is our undisputed Sports Hero of the Week.
