Suits are especially important for men working in the corporate world. From power lunches with executives to spearheading important client meetings, a smart suit will go a long way in creating a lasting impression. Besides, you might have to suit up even if your job doesn't call for it; a suit is pretty much a must at a fancy cocktail party or wedding reception too.
Guylife spoke to Mr. Yogesh Tiwari, VP Sales & Marketing of Blackberrys, and he had the following tips about suits to offer:
A proper fitting coat will feel slightly constricting: When someone tries on a coat and lifts their arms above their head to see if the coat "fits properly," they should make sure it feels slightly constricting. It isn't meant for sports! When you do need to do some physical activity, simply take the coat off.
If you can easily move around in your suit jacket, it will have a sloppy, baggy look to it. When trying on a coat, just keep your arms to the side. Try it both buttoned and unbuttoned.
While getting the measurements taken, make sure the waist is marked correctly. It's better to go up one size if you feel that you have some extra inches at the seams of your jeans. Remember that the jacket sleeve would reveal half an inch of your shirt cuff. Never make it shorter or longer than that.
Buy fitted shirts: If you don't get a fitted shirt, your shirt will billow out on the sides and back when you tuck it in. Hence it's best to get your shirts tailored as per the correct measurements--or find the right fitting shirt for you.
Shirts are available in full sleeves or half sleeves as per your choice. But for men’s suits, always select full sleeved shirts. The best fitting shirt can definitely complement any man's body. And with the colors and patterns, it can highlight your face as well as rejuvenate any dull-colored suits.
Men's suit fabric: The fabric of the suit is very important. There are many different types of fabrics a suit can be made from; each one will feel different and will have its own purpose. Always select the fabric depending on the number of times you are going to use the suit because that helps you not only select the right fabric but also the best suit.
Whichever fabric you choose, remember that you don't want to dry-clean it frequently because that process shortens the life of any garment. Use a brush on your suits, hang them after every wear, and then simply steam them when they have too many wrinkles. It’s also a good idea to use a suit bag.
Complement the Suit: Know what to wear with your suit. Complement the suit with the right colored pocket square, tie or cufflinks to add to the style quotient. Accessories play an important role in enhancing the look of any outfit but selecting the right accessory is as important as wearing them. The right accessories can make an inexpensive suit look fabulous.
Here is a list of some great suit accessories:
Tie: When wearing a tie, it is important to remember that the tip of the tie must hang down till the top of your pants. Silk ties look the best as compared to other. The color of the tie must complement the shirt and the suit.
Cuff links: Cuff links should be selected on the basis of the color of your suit. Generally, these fabulous suit accessories are available in gold and silver, hence one does not have many options to select from. Don't go for wacky designs unless you're at a more casual affair.
Pocket square: Formal occasions demand a pocket square. It ensures you stand out in the crowd of ties! A pocket square doesn’t necessarily need to be in congruence with the tie. It can have one or even two colors in common, but there is no rule. Think of pocket squares are your chance to get creative.
