A real man knows how to handle his liquor. There's no point in drinking if it's going to make you act like a buffoon and give you the mother of all hangovers the next morning. Part of knowing how to be a gentleman is drinking responsibly, which is why we've put this guide together to show you how.
Don't Drink and Drive
Alcohol impairs your judgement and slows your reflexes. When you drink and drive, you're not just endangering your own life and those of your passengers; you're putting everyone else on the road at risk as well.
If that's not enough of a disincentive, consider the fact that the police in most major Indian cities have become extremely strict about keeping those who drink and drive off the road. Offenders are guaranteed a night or two in jail, have their licenses suspended, and sentences of 30-90 days in jail are not uncommon.
If you're on a night out with friends, choose a non-drinker as a designated driver or take turns to be one. When hosting a party, discourage your guests from drinking and driving by organising car pools with sober drivers or calling taxis for them at the end of the night.
When it comes to drinking, you should definitely not overdo it. You should ideally pace yourself--especially on a long night. Try have about one drink for every hour that you're partying. While you may think that's not much, it's still amounts to about 4-5 drinks (which should be your limit anyways) over the course of a night.
An important skill to develop is the ability to hold your drink and converse with those around you rather than guzzle it down and head straight to the bar for another.
There are whole bunch of hangover remedies out there, but the best way to deal with one is by avoiding it altogether! Make sure you're not drinking on an empty stomach and eat a carb-heavy meal before heading out if you know you're going to be doing more drinking than usual.
Also stick to premium liquors--they are generally more refined and less likely to leave you feeling like crap the morning after. Another trick is to stick to the same liquor all night--mixing wine, beer, and different kinds of liquor is a surefire way to check into the hangover hotel.
Try to drink a glass (250 ml) of water between every drink. This will keep you hydrated, lessen the chances of a hangover the next morning, and also help you spread out your drinking over a longer period.
Recognize the Signs of Alcoholism
According to medical experts, you probably are dependent on alcohol if you fulfill three or more of the criteria below over a 12-month period:
-Tolerance (requiring increasing amounts of alcohol to attain the same effect)
-Use in larger amounts or for longer periods than intended
-Persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down on alcohol use
-Time is spent obtaining alcohol or recovering from effects
-Social, occupational and recreational pursuits are given up or reduced because of alcohol use
-Use is continued despite knowledge of alcohol-related harm (physical or psychological)
If you qualify as being dependent on alcohol, it's time to get help and quit. For an alcoholic, the smartest way to drink responsibly is not to drink at all!
