We've seen the movie references, we've heard the horror stories and an unfortunate handful of us have even witnessed someone abusing this drug. However, few of us have really delved into the nitty-gritty of this destructive substance to understand it and the effects it has on those who use it.
Crack cocaine is a highly addictive variation of cocaine with one difference--while regular cocaine is simply a compound of hydrochloride, crack is that same compound processed with ammonia and water. This process of creating it yields crack in the form of chips, chunks and rocks.
The drug came about in the 1980s in the United States and since then--thanks to its easy availability and cheap cost--it has literally ravaged entire poor communities in the country. It takes both a physical and mental toll on its users. As a result, several politicians have even referred to it as the biggest threat to the American populace.
It can be ingested in several ways like snorting, dissolving, injecting and smoking. However, smoking crack is the most preferred way of using this drug.
The high leaves users much more energized. Some say that crack results in greater mental clarity and joy since it is a pleasure centre-seeking intoxicant. Then again, this is entirely a delusion on part of crack users, who just need a reason to justify their addiction.
This drug lasts for only five to ten minutes, and it then leaves users wanting more. And thus begins the vicious circle of addiction--which in this case is very easy.
Of course, it goes without saying that the side-effects of this drug are seriously disastrous. Despite the temporary exhilaration it may cause, the long-term repercussions are grave. Even people who only take it once in a while are at an increased risk for heart attacks, strokes, mental disorders and many other ailments! It's also extremely addictive, and crack addicts are known to lose everything, and then resort to crime or prostitution in their pursuit of cash to buy more crack.
