This one deserves a spot on this list for its sheer duration, not to mention the casualties because of it. An ice storm knocked out the power that was supplied to over five million people in many parts of Canada, including eastern Ontario, Southern Quebec and New Brunswick.

Because the outage lasted up to a few weeks in some places, people were devoid of any heating functional systems in the chilling cold. This led to 30 deaths and nearly 1,000 injuries.
