This all changed when the three-door hatchbacks were released.

This vehicle is currently in its ninth generation of production and is currently enjoying increased popularity in Asia, particularly in China and Japan. According to where it's sold in the world, the Honda Civic goes by a variety of different names. In Europe, it is known as the Civic, while in South Africa it is known as the Honda Ballade.
