With modern technology, civil aviation has become far, far safer than it was when man first took flight at the turn of the last century. Today, the chances of an air crash are approximately one in 700,000--which makes airplanes one of the safest means of transport.

Every critical system on a modern airplane has at least one identical backup, and some super-critical systems (like the yoke, for instance), can be operated manually as well. However, there's no accounting for human error and the sheer power of the concatenation of bad circumstance.
