Mary Read
One of the only female pirates to have gained infamy(other than Anne Bonny), Read spent most of her life impersonating a man. She served under Captain Calico Jack Rackham and as luck would have it, Anne Bonny was also a part of this crew. after several successful raids, the Captain, Anne and Mary were caught in Jamaica, tried and sentenced to be hanged.
She is best remembered for her reply when asked at trial why she, as a woman, took to the life of a pirate: “That as to hanging, it is no great hardship, for were it not for that, every cowardly fellow would turn pirate and so unfit the seas, that men of courage must starve.” Feisty, indeed--we wonder why they are no movies about her life?!
