 These 7 musical maestros have put India on the map over the years and delivered some of the most unforgettable melodies and beats the world has ever known!

A few convoluted definitions of jazz for ear-tickling purposes: "It washes away the dust of every day life," said Art Blakey, or "Jazz is…an open-ended music designed for open minds,' said an another unknown, yet entirely accurate author. All that those really leave us with is the true essence of jazz—it's indescribable, yet utterly lovable. Moving, yet often without an ounce of understanding for its meaning. 

Nothing about jazz comes easy. Whether its tracing its origins, writing about it, creating it, or improvising upon the classics, again and again and again. But it is probably this exact, surreal quality that allows it an unusual position in the world of music. A throne of sorts that can never be fought over or sat on by any other genre. It's the perfectly un-hostile king that rules in peace and can never be overthrown. All this thanks to the sheer inability of anyone who doesn't truly love it, to mimic it in any form—a rarity in any creative field.  

But we're deviating from the purpose of this article—education of course. So here are 10 surprisingly—and hopefully previously unknown—facts about jazz to fatten up your factual bank. Use them well.

Fact One: The word 'jazz' doesn't exactly have the deepest meanings or origins. Not to mention, its origins are the topic of great controversy but here's the most probable one we could find. In its earlier days, 'to jazz' meant to fornicate, 'jazzing' meant 'having sex,' a 'jazzbo' was a lover of ladies while a jazz baby was an easy woman! According to the grapevine, Clarence Williams was the first songwriter to use the word in a song and somehow, it just got stuck in the lingo of that time, going on to be the name of one of the world's greatest genres of music. 

Fact Two: Jazz is hands down, the most hybrid form of music in the world. Drawing from the largest number of influences, including everything from African rhythms, to European Chamber Music to modern day pop elements! Going by those three vastly different genres alone, it's quite apparent that there's truth to this fact!

Fact Three: Few things have been as closely intertwined as jazz and dancing styles. A bit like spaghetti and meatballs perhaps. So in case you were wondering, here are some of the greatest dance forms to have originated from jazz—Truckin', The Shimmy, The Lambeth Walk, Charleston and Black Bottom!

Fact Four: This may not be recorded in anything of true repute, but most jazz musicians will concur that Louisiana has out the greatest volume of jazz musicians and instrumentalists in the world. Which makes it just as famous for its jazz unease as it is for its crawfish, gumbo and crooked politics!

This is probably why the quote "New Orleans is the only place I know of where you ask a little kid what he wants to be and instead of saying "I want to be a policeman," or "I want to be a fireman," he says, I want to be a musician" by Alan Jaffe became so famous.

Fact Five: Speaking of quotes, allow us to introduce you to jazz's most famous quote, by jazz's most famous musician. When asked what the definition of jazz was, Louis Armstrong famously stated, "If you've got to ask, then you'll never know!"

Fact Six: The Saxophone is quite easily one of the most distinct jazz instruments around but it never found a place in the genre until 1920. Previously cited as a Belgian instrument reserved for chambers and orchestral performances, it was America's 6 Brown Brothers who brought it to the limelight in jazz as recording stars and since then, at the risk of sounding trite, there's been no looking back!

Fact Seven: Jazz portrays an unusual duality as far as music genres go. While today most people consider it a genre of the elite and well-established, its roots are quite the opposite. It truly evolved from the oppressed lifestyle of the Black community in America and plenty of vulgarities as can be noted by the origin of the word itself! 

Fact Eight: Miles Davis, often hailed as one of Jjzz's premier artists, with even newbies and jazz-haters being able to recognize he had a nickname that not many people knew of—he was called 'The Prince of Darkness.' He earned this reputation especially amongst music critics and media people due to the impossible task of breaking the ice with this maestro in interviews. 

His album Kind of Blue is regarded as the gold standard of all jazz albums and it was only later in his immaculate career that Davis began to show signs of his 'darkness,' because he began to move ina  direction few critics could understand. And his refusal to talk to media people only made him that much more elusive and mysterious. 

Fact Nine: John Coltrane, another legendary jazz musician, actually has a church named after him in San Francsico's Western Addition District and many believe this is because of his single A Love Supreme, which is apparently a prayer inspired by a man's dedication to his faith, post overcoming addiction. 

As such, the church has a mural of Coltrane above its altar and uses his musical exploration as an explanation for, and an inspiration to, their faith in the divine!

Fact Ten: Though we've named several other geniuses of jazz, it was W.C. Handy who was considered the true 'Father of the Blues' since he laid the foundation for both blues and jazz. Scott Joplin became the pioneer for ragtime and Dett became known as the premier face for classical piano jazz!

A Brief History In Time

ACK comics have been and practically are required reading for any child growing up in India. Started as far back as 1967, the creators may not have anticipated its cultural impact with its conception but no one can deny this comic book series have become an integral part of our cultural heritage. 

It sold over 90 million copies in more than 20 Indian languages and its vibrant, detailed tales told and retold stories of kings, gods and other important Indian figures. It took upon the massive challenge of making the complex narratives of the country's history and mythology enjoyable (and more importantly, understandable) for the youngest readers. 

I grew up on this rather niche (if we look at it from a worldwide perspective) brand of comics myself and as such, was thrilled to hear ACK would be making an appearance at Mumbai's Comic Con. What I hadn't anticipated was how much the brand had grown. How else do you explain the fact that ACK is now all set to hit the big screen with its first ever animated feature film Sons Of Ram - Heroes Will Rise. 

The team seemed as excited as its dynamically-aged audience to present a screening of the film which is scheduled to released during Diwali on November 2. 

Trepid Transition?

We couldn't help but wondering if this was a natural decision for a company that's remained so firmly rooted in how they've always done things, not to mention in one medium however, CEO Vijay Sampath explained it away fairly nonchalantly. 

"Foraying into movies is a logical extension of various formats of our story-telling capabilities in the form of books and magazines.

Our long-term vision is to release a movie every six to eight months and produce animation as well as live action movies,” he said.

Behind The Scenes

As the ACK team mentioned, this film has taken a good 2 years to create. This is largely due to the fact that despite it boasting international standards of animation, they chose to use hand-drawn animation (a style that has become almost obscure due to its detail-oriented/old-school nature) rather than a more technologically advanced style. This was a deliberate decision which makes us think that though ACK is certainly in keeping with the times, they're determined to stay rooted and do things in keeping with the company's ideologies—ones which are persistent in upholding Indian culture and mythology. And then there's the fact that it will be released in 3D. How's that for keeping up with the technology trend? 

The film was made on a budget of Rs 5-6 crores in association with Cartoon Network. The company will also collaborate with Big Bazaar so that they sell film-themed merchandise on sale in various categories including apparel, stationery etc. 

The film's animation was completed in partnership with Malaysia-based inspidea Studios.

The Cast

The film boasts a rather talented voice cast including some of the top names from the theatre and film world such as renowned Bollywood playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan. 

The Plot

Without giving too much away, this film's script is of course based on ACK's bestselling comic book which traces the enchanted journey of Luv and Kush (famous characters from Hindu mythology) into the revered land of Ayodhya, the home of all their fabled heroes. 

You can expect plenty of music, brilliant colours and of course, a revisitation of our mythological heroes in yet another refreshing light by ACK comics. 

What's Next

Just like kamath stated above, this is by no means the first or last foray into the film world for ACK. They've already got a few projects underway including the creation of films around some of their more famous characters like Shikari Shambhu and Suppandi. You'll just have to stay tuned to see what they come up with next.

The Beatles and Sir Mick Jagger are among 150 famous Brits who are under consideration to become the new face of the 10 pound note. Bosses at The Bank Of England have released a list of great Britons who have been suggested for the honour by members of the public ahead of the printing of a batch of new bills next year.

Late royal Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash in France in 1997, is nominated, along with the late Queen Mother.

David Beckham has made the list alongside fellow sports stars including cricket’s Michael Vaughan and rugby’s Jonny Wilkinson.

Political figures including former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst have also been suggested to appear on the new note when it replaces the current bill featuring legendary scientist Charles Darwin.

Overall favourite for the nod is World War II Enigma codebreaker Alan Turing, the computer pioneer who devised techniques for cracking German ciphers.

Hundreds of former and some present Australian spies have posted information about their employment with intelligence agencies on the Internet, which security experts have called ’a gift for foreign espionage’.

A survey conducted by Fairfax Media has found that more than 200 former and present intelligence officers have disclosed their classified employment in profiles on LinkedIn, and other professional networking sites and social media, including Facebook and Twitter.

Many officers have disclosed their employment by agencies, including the top secret Defence Signals Directorate and the Defence Intelligence Organisation, while some have revealed significant details about their work, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

These include employment at specific intelligence facilities, overseas postings and link with allied intelligence agencies, linguistic expertise indicating particular intelligence targets, and involvement with specific issues and information technology systems, the report said.

According to the report, one former Defence Signals Directorate and Defence Intelligence officers have listed postings with counterpart agencies in Canada and New Zealand.

Security experts described the freely available information identifying past and present intelligence officers as ‘surprising’ and said it provided ‘gift for foreign espionage’ especially through social engineering, the report added.

Facebook users in US maybe charged a one-time fee of one dollar to send a message to another user's inbox who they aren't friends with, in a new option that is being tested by the social media firm.

Currently, if you send a Facebook message to someone you're not connected to, it may end up in the ''Other'' tab, an oft-overlooked subsection of the inbox that basically serves as a spam folder, depending on whether you have mutual connections. With the new option, however, you would be able to pay a premium to ensure the message ends up in the main inbox where it is likely to be seen by the recipient, Stuff.co.nz reports.

According to the report, Facebook said users will have the option to mark the incoming message as spam and move it to the ''Other'' tab, which means the sender will be unable to reach their inbox afterwards. However, if the recipient doesn''t take any action, the sender will be able to continue messaging that user's inbox an unlimited number of times after paying the one-time fee, the report said.

"Today we're starting a small experiment to test the usefulness of economic signals to determine relevance. This test will give a small number of people the option to pay to have a message routed to the Inbox rather than the Other folder of a recipient that they are not connected with,” Facebook said in a blog post. The feature has only been turned on in the US so far, but the company added: "We'll continue to iterate and evolve Facebook Messages over the coming months."

Facebook is billing the change as an attempt to crack down on spam by seeing if "imposing a financial cost on the sender" serves as a deterrent to sending unwanted messages, the report added.
